Charity Spotlight: American Red Cross

The nation’s blood supply requires a steady stream of donors who generously gift millions of units of life-saving blood and blood components each year. On average, a patient needs a blood transfusion every two seconds.

With the onset of COVID-19 and the ensuing social distancing and blood drive cancellations, the number of blood donations fell dramatically.  People who donate blood are just as essential as those employed in a critical infrastructure industry. Volunteering to do so contributes immeasurably to the public good of our country. In order to ensure that blood is available to those who need it most, the onus is upon healthy individuals.

In the words of the FDA Director, “We need people to start turning out in force to give blood.” Donating blood is safe as donation centers are skilled in infection control practices and have existing procedures in place to prevent the spread of infections. It also only requires a little of your time. At many blood donation centers, those who are interested in donating can make an appointment to minimize the time it takes to donate.
